Nkisi Power Figure, Songye (Bassonge), DR Congo, Late 19th–Early 20th Century

An exceptionally rare and visually striking zoomorphic Nkisi power figure carved in the rare form of a double-headed animal, representing a protective canine spirit, richly embedded with numerous iron nails driven into the body, symbolising activated oaths, protections, and spiritual interventions. The elongated wooden body is powerfully modelled, standing on four stout legs, with an expressive open mouth revealing carved teeth and an extended tongue. The eyes are inlaid with characteristic glass, giving the figure an intense, animated presence. At the top centre of the back is a ritual cavity fitted with a glass container and original glass lid, used for the insertion of magical substances. The glass shows a minor damage consistent with age and ritual use. The surface displays a deep, mature patina with clear signs of prolonged ceremonial handling and use.

Overall very good and authentic condition with strong age wear; minor losses and cracks consistent with age; the glass lid of the central container is partially damaged.
