Carved Ritual Granary Door, Dogon, Mali, Early 20th Century

Traditional carved wooden granary door from Mali attributed to the Dogon culture, featuring two hinged panels decorated with multiple relief carvings of stylised figures, ritual objects, vessels and geometric protective symbols. Such doors originally secured the entrances of elevated grain storage structures and served both practical and symbolic purposes, representing ancestors and protective forces associated with fertility and agricultural prosperity. The piece retains its original wooden locking bar and hand-forged iron fixings and displays a deep, worn patina consistent with prolonged traditional use.
