Alpine Landscape with Waterfall by Gustav Barbarini, 19th Century

A majestic and expansive 19th-century oil on canvas by the renowned Austrian landscape painter Gustav Barbarini. This work, titled "Berglandschaft mit Wasserfall" (Mountain Landscape with Waterfall), depicts a quintessential Romantic Alpine scene. A rushing stream cascades over rocks in the foreground, leading the eye toward a traditional mountain chalet nestled among towering fir trees, all set against a dramatic, snow-dusted mountain range bathed in a soft, atmospheric light. This lot is distinguished by its exceptional provenance and historical documentation. It was acquired through the Dorotheum in Vienna in 1943 and includes an original handwritten appraisal by Hans Enzinger (Academic Painter and Court-Appointed Expert for the Dorotheum), valuing the work at 5,000 Reichsmark in 1943. Signed lower left with "G. Barbarini". Housed in its heavy, period-correct ornate gilded stucco frame. The reverse of the stretcher bears the number "2134" in three locations, probably corresponding to the historical Dorotheum auction/lot records. The canvas remains in good age-related condition with a fine, natural craquelure consistent with its late 19th-century origin; the colors remain warm and atmospheric; the wooden stretcher shows typical wear at the points where the nails are fixed; the contemporary gilded frame is structurally sound but shows visible signs of age with several areas of chipping, flaking, and loss to the stucco/gilding.
